Crash causes taxi to flip on roof, closing part of State Highway One in Wellington

6:51 pm on 28 March 2025

A crash in Wellington involving multiple vehicles blocked a main road on State Highway One this afternoon.

Police said the crash happened before 2.30pm on Friday on Wellington Rd, and left one car on its roof.

The crash closed a lane on State Highway 1, however, the lane has since been reopened.

Motorists were advised earlier on Friday to take diversions on Crawford Rd, Rongotai Rd and Kilbirnie Crescent.

NZTA said drivers should expect delays travelling between downtown Wellington and the eastern suburbs.

Police were yet to determine if anyone was injured.

The car which flipped was a Wellington Combined Taxi.

Wellington Combined Taxis contracts manager Harpreet Kohli told RNZ he was made aware of the crash at 3pm.

Kohli said when his staff arrived at the scene ambulance workers and police were attending to their driver.

He said to his knowledge he was not injured badly besides some concussion.

He was taken to hospital for some x-rays, Kohli said.

The company would speak to the driver about the potential cause of the crash when they were able to, he said.

Wellington Rd resident William Baird heard the crash from home as it happened.

When he went outside to see what happened he could see the taxi was flipped on its roof and emergency services were already there.

His flatmate Eddy Kerhislop said the stretch of road was "pretty horrible".

During his two years living on the road, he said he'd seen one other crash in the area.
