Premier League: Brentford hit five at Luton & Burnley thrash Sheff Utd - reaction

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "He [goalkeeper Muric] has made fine saves in every game. For us it is not an option top not back our players. We have been exposed to a very high level. We have to back the talent they do have. Today was a match-winning performance.

"The time they score their goal couldn't be worse and then you are looking to see if nerves will settle. We did what we had to do in the business end of the pitch.

"That is the urgency we have to bring to every game. We can look forward that every game we shouldn't have any fear and to go for it. This league is filled with difficult games. It will always be the toughest challenge.

"The main thing I care about is the team keeps going, that we play with no fear and we focus on our own development. This is where we get the results from - the fact we get better."

Luton manager Rob Edwards speaking to Sky Sports: "We weren't our normal self today, I'm not sure why at the moment.

"I just reviewed the goals and they are really poor. There is a lack of intensity in our running. A set-piece for the third goal - that's not like us.

"Brentford were good and we were bad, it's not a good recipe. I have to say sorry to the supporters.

"We wanted a reaction from everybody, we have leaders in this group. Normally we finish games strongly. The second half is usually when we are strong and we didn't do that today. I need to find an answer for that.

"I hope we can [stay up], there is belief there. Before today there ceretainly was and we need to snap out of it, dust ourselves down and get back to what we do.

"We don't want to go down with a whimper and I won't accept that."

Brentford manager Thomas Frank speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We've finally got a bit of momentum. We had some very good performances recently, especially against Man United and Aston Villa.

"Today we performed very well and had some players back. It's remarkable that we still potentially were without four starts.

"I respect Rob Edwards and his staff and they make it difficult for every team, that comes here. We were very dominant and on top throughout the game, which interests me massively.

"We hit a top performance in many ways. We wanted Luton to earn the right to attack. We also knew we had to play off behind them when we had the chance. We found a good balance between the two."

On multiple goalscorers: "So pleasing for [Yoane] Wissa, scoring two goals, I was very happy for that. Keane [Lewis-Potter] also and [Kevin] Schade from the bench. Bryan [Mbeumo] was unlucky not to score but he assisted two."

On when Ivan Toney will return: "My aim and hope is that Ivan is ready and available for Everton."

On moving to the edge of safety: "We knew that playing against Luton who were seven points below us, it was a big day. We want to keep this momentum going into next season.

"There's a very important game against Everton but this league is crazy and relentless. On a season when it's not going your way then it can be very difficult."

This was Brentford's biggest league win on the road since a 5-0 win at Preston North End in the second tier on 10 April 2021.

It is Brentford's joint-biggest win in a Premier League match, alongside their 4-0 home win over Manchester United on 13 August 2022.

Luton manager Rob Edwards to BBC Match of the Day: "It was a very difficult day for us. Brentford were good and we weren't. I've just reviewed the goals, there was a lack of intensity, certainly. In transitional moments they were too quick and goof for us. For some reason we had a lethargy today and that can't happen in the Premier League. They punished us.

"My initial thoughts, and that's just from looking at the goals, was we could have done a lot about every single one of them.

"It is surprising and I hope it is a one off. Knowing this group I'm pretty sure it will be, but we have to bounce quickly. The games are running out and we know what it means.

"Brentford were very good and we were poor. They deserved to win the game. In spells in the first half it looked a very even game. We had moments. It's all ifs buts and maybes. We didn't show enough, certainly in the second half.

"We're fighting for our lives to stay in the Premier League. It shouldn't be hard [to be motivated]. It's a tough day.

"Our supporters are incredible, I'm sorry they had to go through that. We owe them a performance now."

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "McBurnie had to come off with a tight hamstring. Hamer had to come off with a tight calf.

"We understand the magnitude of today's result. Still, as a professional footballer, the way I have been brought up, I like to think they have those qualities and will go to the end. Until it is mathematically there in front of us we have to. I will. My staff will. The players need to do that. We have an obligation to the supporters and the division.

"I don't think there was a lack of fight. It sometimes comes down to when you need to put teams to bed."

Luton midfielder Jordan Clark: "Very low. It's a tough loss to take. We build this game up so big all week. We were second-best all over the pitch. Full credit to Brentford, we weren't good enough today as a team. I want to say sorry to the fans who were amazing.

"You've got to go home and look in the mirror as an individual player. We were just second best, that's not like us, we're usually on the front foot, pressing.

"You've got to look at yourself first and foremost, we know we weren't good enough as a team. We've got to be men and bounce back next week. We've got four massive, massive games now."

Luton have equalled a club top-flight record for most defeats in a single season: 21 in 1959-60 and 1990-91.

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder, speaking to Sky Sports: "It sums up our season. When we are close to our best we are competitive, as we were for the first 35 minutes. We should have been two or three up. Then all of a sudden in a heartbeat we are two down.

"Where does that come from? Individual mistakes, unit mistakes, lack of leaderships - all of those three things rolled into one. There is a whole of things, not just today, pre-me, that are not right. The league is too powerful. Unfortunately you get exposed.

"When you come to a football club you have to assess pretty quickly what is needed. There has to be the medium and long-term build. We are preparing for games. There is a lack of leadership, quality, things we know and understand. For teams to be successful, these are things that need to be dealt with."

Luton lost 5-1 at Man City last week, but that was away from home. Today's loss is the club's biggest top flight home loss since a 5-0 defeat against Manchester United in February, 1984.

Goalscorer Yoane Wissa to BBC Match of the Day: "The aim was to control the game from the beginning. We're happy with the win but we didn't expect to have scored five goals.

"We went after them, we know it's tough to play here. The confidence is high.

"We wanted to score more, of course.

"Every game we aim to win, so we are happy."

Goalscorer Yoane Wissa: "We controlled the game from the first minute to the end. We had to win, we know how tight it is to stay in the Prem."

On his opening goal: "I had one thing in my head, shoot. I was in control and confident, and of course I'm happy when it goes into the back of the net.

"I want to score a hat-trick, it was the first time I've had a chance to score one. It's unlucky for me.

"I think Brentford are back, even if it is late [in the season]."

Lorenz Assignon became just the second Burnley defender to both score and assist in a single Premier League game, after Daniel Fox did so in a 2-1 victory over West Ham in February 2010.

As far as I can see Brentford are safe now, but how can Luton drag themselves up and go again after this defeat when they go to Wolves?

They still have hopes of staying up but those hopes are fading.
